There were apparently two (2) Robert J. Hitches in Maryland in 1860, born about the same year. Robert John Hitch was son of Robert(?) Tubman and Mary (Malone) Hitch and Robert (?) Joseph Hitch was son of Benjamin Pitts and Molly (Lankford) Hitch. One must take care as the two can easily be confused when examining records of the time period. Robert(?) Joseph Hitch was in Baltimore by 1860 where Robert John Hitch remained in and around Allen, MD until his death in 1901.

In 1856, Robert J. Hitch made application as a seaman in Philadelphia as: Robert J. Hitch, age 23, from Maryland. (Seaman Protection Certification Applications for the Port of Philadelphia 1824-1861)

Robert married Mary White? about 1859. (Mary White? was born in 1839 in MD 3.)
