In the 1824 Tax Assessment records for Sussex County, John Hitch "of Gillis" is listed in Northwest Fork Hundred to pay his personal tax. (SxTA-1824)

This may also be the John Hitch listed in the Tax Assessment of 1836 for Little Creek Hundred, Sussex County, DE.

John Hitch and family moved to Brown County, Indiana between 1838 and 1839 and then to Clay County, Illinois probably after he purchased land there in the Fall of 1852.

In the Federal Census of 1850, John Hitch is listed in Brown County, Indiana (Jackson Township, page 209) in a household as follows: - John Hitch, age 46, born DE - Emily Hitch, age 38, born DE - Matilda Hitch, age 12, born DE - Adaline Hitch, age 11, born IN.
