Eugene Hitch, 75, of Road 300S died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2006, at Columbus Health & Rehabilitation Center. An Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Hitch was a 40-year employee of Arvin Industries where he was a factory worker and retired from the shipping department. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church, enjoyed nature, fishing, hunting, camping, playing music, singing and spending time with his friends. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Kevin Metz officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon until service time Saturday. Burial will be at Bethel Baptist Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church. Mr. Hitch was born in Adair County, Ky., July 4, 1931, the son of Samuel R. and Eliza Etta Clark Hitch. He married Martha D. Pierce June 5, 1954, in Columbia, Ky. He is survived by his wife; children, Betty (Kirt) Vannice, Patsy (Curt) Battin, Penny (Charlie) Pedigo, Donald E. Hitch and Sammy Hitch, all of Columbus, and Marilyn (John) Winright of Gaffney, S.C.; a brother, William "Chubby" Hitch of Kentucky; grandchildren, Christina Law, Royce Burns, Joshua and Caleb Winright, Jayson George, Brandon Battin and Dustten and Samantha Hitch; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Ambra, Rylan and Kyler; eight stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Eugene married Martha Dimple Pierce, daughter of James Robert Pierce and Mary Jane Smith, on 05 Jun 1954 in Columbia, Adair Co., KY.¹ (Martha Dimple Pierce was born on 15 Jan 1936.)
