The following is from the May 27 1876 edition of the Salisbury Advertiser: "During the storm on last Sunday night, the residence of Mr. J. W. Murrell, a short distance below Harris landing (This is near modern day Harrison Landing Road and the Wicomico River in Mt. Vernon, MD), was struck by lightning. The chimney was entirely demolished, and Mr. Murrell who was asleep in an upper room was rendered senseless, and did not speak until the following morning. His wife and children who were in the bed room on the first floor were not injured at all. The house was filled for some time with a heavy sulphurous smoke."
