Col. Pepper Clay GREENVILLE -- The retired Army Col. Pepper Clay, 74, died Wednesday at the University Of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Services were held at 4 pm, Thursday from the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, MS. Military Rites are to be at 3 pm today in Lexington, KY Cemetery with Boone-Wells Funeral Home in charge. Col. Clay leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Martindale Clay of Greenville, MS; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Boyajian of Tennafly, NJ and Mrs. Susan Hisharoon of Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Sawitzky, New Haven, CT and Mrs. Elizabeth Blanford, Gloster, MA; and six grandchildren. Mr. Clay, a native of Lexington, KY, and a graduate of West Point in 1925, served in field artillery in World War II and the Korean Conflict, retired in 1955 and moved to Greenville to make his home.

Robert married Mary Martha Martindale, daughter of Col. Elijah Bishop Martindale Jr. and Lucy Weisiger Hitch. (Mary Martha Martindale was born on 05 Sep 1903 in Paris, Edgar Co., IL,1 died on 29 Jan 1997 in Port Gibson, Claiborne Co., MS and was buried about 01 Feb 1997 in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Fayette Co., KY.)
