Eunice Hitch

Cynthia S. McNaughten writes of Eunice Hitch (in her Hitch Families of Fairhaven, Mass.) the following: "That George had a daughter Eunice is clearly proved by a curious document at Taunton probate (BK. 130, p. 85), dated 14 Oct 1784, appointing him her guardian, she being a minor under 14, which would give her a DOB of late 1770 at the earliest. No other children are involved. The purpose appears to be the distribution of monays from a deceased person's estate. (Possibly a WEEKS or HITCH grandparent ... Another possibility is that the document is retroactive to an earlier bequest when she WAS under 14, but with the 1768/69 birthdate…." "It is NOT PROVED that she is the same Eunice who married a Benjamin Drew and has DOB of 1768/69 from age given in various death/burial records. However, there is no other Eunice around; her granddaughter married a Hitch-Jenne-Stackpole cousin, with whose family both Eunice and Benjamin are buried…" "From this, we see that all circumstantial evidence points to this Eunice Hitch, daughter of George, as being the person who married Benjamin Drew in 1790. The minor difference in birthdates (1 or 2 years) is very common in older records and might be attributed to the passing of time; e.g., death and burial records from 1842 indicate birthdates of 1768/69."
