Maxine W. Hitch, age 91, died January 8, 2013 at the family home. She had lived for the past year at Morning View Village. She was born July 3, 1921 in Tippah County, MS, and was a graduate of Chalybeate High School and of Blue Mountain College. In 1944 she married Thomas Franklin Hitch and moved to East Tennessee. In addition to leading a full and busy life as a farm wife and mother, she taught business, shorthand, and typing at both Everett and Heritage High Schools. Maxine was an avid reader, bird watcher, and wildflower enthusiast. She enjoyed the out-of-doors, especially hiking on the family farm and in the Smoky Mountains. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Maryville, and briefly attended Fairview United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by parents, DeWitt and Milo Wilson, sister, Madge (Orion) Hill, brother O.M. (Loyce) Wilson, husband, Frank Hitch and son Lee Erle Hitch. She is survived by son Ben Hitch, daughter Jan (Russ) Driver, brother Odell (Martha Lee) Wilson, many dear nieces and nephews, and other loving family and friends. The family would like to thank Home Instead Senior Care, Morning View Village Assisted Living, and Kindred Care (Maryville Health) for their loving care. Family will receive friends Saturday, January 12 from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Smith West Chapel. Funeral will be at 1:00 P.M. at Smith West Chapel. Family and friends will assemble for interment at 2:30 P.M. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Jerry Russell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blount County Public Library, 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville, TN 37801 or Friends of the Smokies, P.O. Box 1660, Kodak, TN 37764-7660.
