This compiler is unsure of the origins of the Cthell family on the lower eastern shore of MD but James (c1700-1772) was there by 1723 when he shows on the Somerset Tax Lists (no earlier extant lists are known). On Mar 28 1726, George Benston [Benson], planter, et ux. Rebecca Benston sold tract GEORGES PURCHASE to James Cathell, planter (SoLR-TH:065). Apr 10 1729, he had the tract CATHELLS VENTURE surveyed. On Apr 1 1742, he had JAMES ADDITION surveyed and Mar 14 1743, he had CATHELLS CHANCE surveyed. All of these are in modern Wicomico County near and including Oakland School Road. ![]() James married Elizabeth Davis in 1720 in Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. (Elizabeth Davis was born about 1700 and died before 1772 in Worcester Co., MD.) |
