James Cathell
This compiler is unsure of the origins of the Cthell family on the lower eastern shore of MD but James (c1700-1772) was there by 1723 when he shows on the Somerset Tax Lists (no earlier extant lists are known). On Mar 28 1726, George Benston [Benson], planter, et ux. Rebecca Benston sold tract GEORGES PURCHASE to James Cathell, planter (SoLR-TH:065). Apr 10 1729, he had the tract CATHELLS VENTURE surveyed. On Apr 1 1742, he had JAMES ADDITION surveyed and Mar 14 1743, he had CATHELLS CHANCE surveyed. All of these are in modern Wicomico County near and including Oakland School Road. James married Elizabeth Davis in 1720 in Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. (Elizabeth Davis was born about 1700 and died before 1772 in Worcester Co., MD.) |
