bullet  Notes:

Of measles, at his residence in Bethel Township, Shelby county, Mo., on the 27th day of March, 1876, Dr. E. P. McCullough, in the thirty-first year of his age. The death of such a man as Dr. McCullough, one of the most prominent young physicians of the county, deserves more than a brief and casual notice. Edward F. McCullough was born in Marion county, in the year 1846. At the age of 22 he determined on the practice of medicine, and began the study of his profession under the instruction of Dr. Raines, a Emerson, Marion county, Mo., in the year 1868. In the month of March, 1870 he graduated with honor at the St. Louis Medical Institute, and shortly afterward, in 1871, was married to Miss Mattie E. Bowles, of Marion county. In the month of August during this year, he moved to Shelby county and located at or near the town of Bethel, for the purpose of practicing his profession. Coming to Shelby in the very prime of his life with a spirit of energy rarely equaled, and never excelled with a spirit of sterling integrity and a will and determination which laughed at obstacles, a nature warm, zealous, aspiring - almost impetuous - kind, well cultivated, cherishing a deep love for his profession, it was impossible that such a man should not make his mark, and surely and rapidly attain wealth and position. His whole life while here among us, was as candid and free from guile, as the light of a cloudless day. As a citizen he was liberal; and progressive in his ideas. As a neighbor and friend he was sociable, warm-hearted, and true. As a husband and father he was kind and indulgent. Loved and respected by his neighbors, honored and revered by his patrons and with an extensive practice gaining every day in popularity as a physician, Dr. McCullough was destined to rival in his profession those of maturer years. But he is gone, and we doubt if his place can be easily filled. Lost to his family and his friends. And he departed, too, like one "who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams." Paris Mercury, 11 April 1876, p.2
