This compiler had the chance to meet with Eva Lenore (Hitch) Walker in the late summer of 1995. Even while she was approaching her 80th birthday, she was very active and extremely keen of mind.
Eva Hitch Walker Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, born February 19, 1916, in Princeton, Indiana, died peacefully in Lansing on June 13, 2009. Preceded in death by her husband, John Walker, and daughter, Mary Holliday, survived by daughters Nancy Compton and Elizabeth (Arthur) Seagull, grandchildren Carla (Terry) Randazzo, Jeff Bushey, Michael Bushey, David Seagull, Jacob (Judy Smith) Seagull, Jon (Debbie) Seagull, Tom Holliday, and six great-grandchildren. Eva grew up in Indiana and Wisconsin, raised her family in New York and Maryland, and lived many years in a home built by her father, Allen Hitch, in Bradenton, Florida. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, she taught in Kentucky and Milwaukee during the Depression. A true nature lover, Eva was a long-time member of the Audubon Society. She enjoyed birdwatching, wildflowers, and walks in the woods. A woman of many talents, she played the piano and clarinet, did beautiful hand sewing, and was an excellent amateur photographer with many awards to her credit. Her brownies and "Grammy cookies" were famous. She founded the Capital Area Thimble Society in Bethesda, MD, in 1984 and was its president for 20 years. She loved travel, good music, good books, and "sensible" conversation. Her sunny outlook and passionate interest in life brought joy to those who knew her and will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends at a shiva minyan in the Seagull home in Okemos on Monday, June 15 at 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Burcham Hills Retirement Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michigan Audubon Society, Planned Parenthood, or your local food bank. Arrangements by Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel.
