Various receipts for Arch Johnson dating 1910-1918 from the business N.W. Carey Hardware It was owned by Norman William Carey (1886-1952). He married Hilda Leona Acworth (1892-1950), both are buried in the St. John's Methodist Church Cemetery.
The business operated out of Fruitland, MD as a store providing "General Hardware" till late 1919 when it sold out. See below a clipping from the "Wicomico News" newspaper from October 1919 listing the business for sale and what it provided to the community. It is unclear without further research why the business was being sold as Norman W. Carey was still a relatively young man of age 33 in 1919 except that it seems he wanted to get into the fruit produce business.
In the 1910 Census, Carey had not married yet and was living with his parents William T. and Ida M. (Smith) Carey in/near Fruitland "on Road leading to Coulbourn Road" which is modern Division Street probably down near where it intersects with Slab Bridge Road. Norman Carey is listed as a merchant in a hardware store where his father is a general farmer. In 1920, 1930 and 1940, Norman Carey is listed as a broker of produce and living in Fruitland.
Norman married Hilda Leona Ackworth, daughter of Samuel L. Ackworth and Sarah Ellen Carey. (Hilda Leona Ackworth was born on 26 Nov 1892 in Wicomico Co., MD, died on 26 Jul 1950 in Wicomico Co., MD and was buried about 29 Jul 1950 in St. John's Methodist Church Cemetery, Fruitland, Wicomico Co., MD.)
