Ethel Mae Hook Shiles, 88, of Daytona Beach, went to be with her Lord November 29 in Daytona Beach, FL. A memorial service will be held by the family at First Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ) 326 S. Palmetto Ave., Daytona Beach, on Saturday, December 5, 1PM. Ethel was born in Wilmington, NC to Samuel Francis Hook and Cora Lee Piver Hook. She grew up in Bessemer City, NC where due to the untimely deaths of her parents she was on her own at 14 years of age. With her best friend, Ida Thames Brooker, she soon moved from Columbia, SC to Atlanta, GA working as a waitress, Rich's Department Store Clerk, and Rich's hand and hat model. In 1945 she and Miss Thames moved to Daytona Beach, FL a place she always referred to as "Paradise." While working at Johnson's, Coffee Shop she met her husband, Harry J. (Dick) Shiles Jr. Married in 1946, they were married 55 years until his passing in 2002. Preceded in death by sisters, Frances Little (Daytona Beach, FL), Lorraine Stynchcomb (Astor, FL), Rosemary Anderson Chieppa (Ormond Beach, FL), Martha Gold (Daytona Beach, FL), brother, Samuel Hook, (Daytona Beach, FL) and half sister, Evelyn Hall (Columbia, SC). She is survived by daughter, Vivian "Vicki" McMillan (William), (Lompoc, CA), sons, Harry J. Shiles III (Daytona Beach, FL), Michael Shiles (Daytona Beach, FL) grandchildren, Kimberly Jaques (Henderson, NV), Pamela Gandarillas (Vancouver, WA), Amy Thacker, (Henderson, NV), Kelley Kelly, (Tustin, CA), Kyle McMillan, (Ft Bragg, NC), William McMillan, (Las Vegas, NV), Harry J Shiles IV (Daytona Beach, FL), and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was a clerk in the Toy Department of Dunn Brother's Hardware store for 20 years and a precinct worker for her South Peninsula Precinct for 25 years. She has been a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for 69 years holding many offices of the church and was always willing to give of her time and energy. Her greatest loves were her beloved Husband, Dick, who she is once again with, and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be sending her absentee ballot for Hillary Clinton.

Ethel married Harry J. Shiles Jr., son of Harry Julian Shiles and Vivian L., in 1946 in FL. (Harry J. Shiles Jr. was born on 08 Jul 1920 in SC,^{1 2} died on 20 Jan 2002 in FL and was buried about 23 Jan 2002 in Daytona Memorial Park, Daytona, Volusia Co., FL.)
