ALLEN -- Kathryn Pollitt Carey, 86, of Allen died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Allen on June 23, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Morris "Big Daddy" Pollitt, a former sheriff of Wicomico County, and the late Agnes Malone "Biggie" Pollitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis C. Carey Jr., in 1970; a beloved daughter, Judith Ann Carey, also in 1970; and her two brothers, Jesse M. Pollitt Jr. and Judge Richard M. Pollitt.

She is survived by a daughter, Betty C. Sumstine and her husband, Ed, of Salisbury; a son, Willis Pollitt Carey and his wife, Virginia, of Allen; a sister, Mary Lee Pollitt Kolb of Allen; three grandchildren, Edward W. Sumstine, James S. Sumstine and Christopher Willis Carey; three great-grandchildren, Caleah, Karl and Kathryn "Kate" Sumstine; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kathryn graduated from Wicomico High School in 1937 and Paynter Business College in 1938. She married in 1940 and worked with her husband and father-in-law in the family business of W.C. Carey & Son until it was sold to the present Outten Brothers. She retired in 1985 after 21 years as office manager of Moore's Building Supplies in Salisbury.

She was a member and past president of the Wicomico Junior Women's Club; former member of the Junior Board of Peninsula Regional Medical Center; member and past president of the Allen Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary; member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary BPOE 817; member of the Somerset Historical Society and Allen Historical Society; and a member, pianist and part-time organist at Allen Asbury United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women. She had also devoted herself in various capacities to the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, Allen Lions Club and the Methodist Youth Foundation.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at noon at Allen Asbury United Methodist Church in Allen. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Pastor Laurence Stookey will officiate. Interment will be in Allen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Allen Asbury United Methodist Church, the Allen Volunteer Fire Company, Allen Historical Society or Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802, to which the family will be forever grateful.


Kathryn married Willis Cleveland CAREY Jr., son of Willis Cleveland CAREY Sr. and Sarah Lavenia LYNCH, on 26 Aug 1940 in Wicomico Co., MD. (Willis Cleveland CAREY Jr. was born on 20 Jun 1917 in Wicomico Co., MD and died on 14 Jan 1970 in Wicomico Co., MD.)
