William Beauchamp Tilghman, one of the most prominent business men of Salisbury, Md., died at Walters Park, Pa., Friday night, April 13th, aged 68 years. Mr. Tilghman was well known in Palatka having, with different members of his family, visited his cousin, Rev. N. J. Tilghman, several winters. He left an estate valued at $130,000 to $140,000. From the Baltimore Sun Newspaper, Mr. Tilghman was a self-made man. He was born on the Driscoll Farm in the Nutters District, a few miles from Salisbury, October 13, 1839. He came of sturdy English stock, and when his father, William Beauchamp Tilghman (sr.), consented to allow his son to come to Salisbury as a boy in the store of the late John D. Williams it was with the understanding that the was to give a part of his yearly salary of $75 to hire a man to help run the home farm. From the time young William entered the mercantile world he made his mark. He was a natural merchant and business man, and his success was attained by his own effort.
William Beauchamp Tilghman went on to partner with Humphrey Humphreys in 1862 to form Humphrey & Tilghman which became the best-known mercantile and lumber business on the Eastern Shore. This business dissolved in 1895 and William formed the William B. Tilghman Company. It was Salisbury's largest business concern at the time of his death. He was a principle organizer of Salisbury National Bank and president of the Salisbury Building Loan and Bank Association until he retired.
William married Mary SHIPLEY.
