Evelyn Rayne Moore, age 90, went from the arms of her loving family into the arms of Jesus, her Savior, on the morning of Sunday, July 23, 2023. Evelyn was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend. Evelyn was born on October 19, 1932, near Powellville to the late Lawrence Edward and Viola Mae Shockley Rayne. Evelyn and her late brother, John Gillis Rayne, learned early on the value of hard work, service, and love for family. This was the legacy of a farm family growing up in the 1930's and 1940's in a small, but close-knit, community. On April 7, 1938, Evelyn and her family experienced the untimely death of her brother which drew them ever closer together.
Evelyn loved Powellville. Growing up in Powellville, there was much to do. She and her girlfriends would gather at the Adkins Mill Pond or Tony's Store and go to the beach at Public Landing or Ocean City. Evelyn received her formal education at Powellville Elementary School and later attended Pittsville Junior High School where she graduated in May 1950. It was in Powellville that she would meet her future husband, Oliver James Moore, of Wango. They would marry on July 27, 1950, in the Powellville Church parsonage. Building on their family's legacies of hard work and service, they established a poultry farm and expanded the logging operation started by Oliver's late father, James. Together, they established the Powellville Lumber Company. Evelyn enjoyed sharing stories of the early days and especially, of growing up and raising a family in Powellville. Dancing, especially doing the twist, was a favorite past time. From Wango to Powellville, Evelyn loved checking on her farms and monitoring the growth of the soybeans and corn. This was a daily outing that she enjoyed. As she became unable to drive, she enjoyed these rides with her daughter and son. Evelyn enjoyed worshipping with the faithful people of Powellville United Methodist Church where she was a member and faithful supporter of the church ministries. She enjoyed singing the old hymns and a good Sunday sermon. Evelyn was a dedicated trustee of the Powellville Cemetery and helped to establish its perpetual trust. Those who knew Evelyn will remember her infectious smile, compassionate spirit, quick wit, and strong love for her family.
Memories of love and compassion will forever be cherished by her son Edward Oliver Moore (Patricia), daughter, Diane Moore Smith (Richard), grandchildren Melissa Lewis (Harley), Kevin Smith (Jessica) and Danielle Pedri (Curt), great-grandchildren Madison and Emerson Savage, Mikayla and Abigail Smith, Luke and Jacob Pedri. She is survived by many special nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Joann Duguay who provided special care for Evelyn during the past few months.
A viewing will be held at the Holloway Funeral Home on Friday, July 28, 2023, from 10:00 \endash 11:00. A celebration of life will begin at 11:00 a.m. and officiated by her grandson, Kevin Smith, Pastor Cameron McDonough, and Pastor Danny Travers. Evelyn will be entered into eternal rest at the Powellville Cemetery.
Evelyn married Oliver James Moore, son of Charles James Moore and Gladys Virginia Phillips, on 27 Jul 1950 in Wicomico Co., MD.
