Differing on-line genealogies have him born in Germany or France but, according to his son's William Mitchell Fralish's death certificate, he is listed as born in France. The same with daughter Martha Fralish and son Isaac Lee so it was understood by the immediate family that their father John Bryant Fralish was born in France. Even more importantly, the 1860 Census lists his birth place as France which he, himself, likely presnted to the census taker.

He is listed in the 1850 state of Alabama census in Dale County with two males, one age more than 21 and one age 18-45, and one female over age 21. By 1866, he is in Pike Co., AL (as John Frahlich). In 1870, an agricultural survey of Pike County, AL shows he owns 82 acres of land of which 30 are improved and 52 are woodland. The cash value of his farm was $300 and farm implements $10. He had livestock that included one mule/ass, 4 milk cows, 2 cattle, 10 pigs all worth $250. He also had 150 bushels of indian corn.
