Katherine (?)

Somerset Sampler shows John Rhodes had a first wife named Katherine and that she was the mother of at least his first 4 children. However, his second wife Elizabeth named granddaughters Elizabeth and Patience Roades, who were the daughters of John Rhodes' first son John, who mentioned a living mother in his will of 1687. Torrence notes that children John, Robert, Martha and Werenia are simply recorded as children of John Rhodes. When Werenia death was recorded she was shown as a daughter of John Rhodes and his wife Katherine. His last 2 children Elizabeth and William were recorded as the children of John Rhodes and his wife Elizabeth when they were born in Someset County. Torrence also notes that when the eldest son John died in Sussex County in 1687 naming "my most dear and tender mother" that he was evidently referring to his step-mother or mother-in-law. Following this logic one would also have to conclude that when the 2nd wife Elizabeth made her will in 1694 and referred to daughters and grandchildren that they were actually her step-daughters and step-grandchildren.

Katherine married Dr. John Rhoades about 1650. (Dr. John Rhoades was born about 1625 in Wells, Somersetshire, England and died about Dec 1683 in Sussex Co., DE.)
