She was probably an orphan in the streets of NY or left at an orphanage by her birth parents.The only thing known for certain at this point is she is listed on a 1880 Mechanicsville census as adopted and born in NY." Also, the 1880 census notes that both her parents were born in NY.

In 1910, she is listed as having 5 children of which 4 were still living.
