John Smith (taylor) was named in a deposition on 1 March 1655/56 at Northampton Co, VA. This day ffollcott Obben, cooper, (by his corporall oath taken in open Court at Occahannocke) pved(sic) that the estate of Tho: Savage dec'd, is debted to him for work performed at his trade (According to agreement with Rebecca Savage in the time of her widdowhood) the sum & quantity of 780 lbs of tobacco & caske. It is therefore ordered in case Mr. Jno Smyth who married the widdow & relict of the said Thomas Savage shall not attend the next Court holden in Northampton County shew a suffic cause to ye contrary that then Judgmt shall be entered & Exec forthwith pceede att ye suite of ye said Folloctt Obben for payment of he siad Debt with Court charges.
John Smith (taylor) bought land in 1665 at tract A9, between Painter & Quinby, Accomack Co, VA. Col. William Kendall sold the south 500 acres of this tract to John Smith and the north 1,000 acres to Timothy Coe each of whom received a patent in his own name, the next year.
John made a will on 27 October 1677 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as John Smith, taylor. To eldest son George Smith 200 acres where I now live, reversion to his brothers. Wife Joyce. To son James 150 acres adjcent George's land. To son John 150 acres adjcent the land of his brother James, reversion to my youngest son Thomas. To daughter Ann Hammon. Son in law Edward Hamon. To my 5 youngest children, James, John, Thomas, Director & Joyce. Son in law (step-son) Thomas Savage. To John Tomson & his wife Rebecca. John Tomson, George Smith & Thomas Savage overseers over my above named children. Sons to be at age at 18 & daughters at 15. Witt: John Booth, Alexander Addison. He died before 19 February 1677/78 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated.
Administration of John estate was filed on 16 December 1678 at Accomack Co, VA. It was on this date that administration on the estate of John Smith was granted to Maxamillian Gore as marrying the relict of the said John. He left land in 1678 at tract A9, between Painter & Quinby, Accomack Co, VA. Although a survey gave him 550 acres, John Smith, wife Joyce, devised only the 500 acres covered by his patent, as follows: son George the 200 acres at the east end "whereon I am now situated; to son James the next 150 acres and to son John the remaining 150 acres. He also mentioned another son Thomas and daughters Director and Ann, the latter being the wife of Edward Hamon. The widow Joyce later married Maximillian Gore (A192).
