Col. John Wise Sr.

John was born on 16 November 1617 at Sydenham, Devonshire, England. John Wise sailed from Gravesend, England on 4 Jul 1635 and settled on Chesconessex Creek near Accomack. He reportedly purchased just over 1,000 acres on the Chesconnessex and Onancock creeks from the Indians in exchange for 7 Dutch blankets.

He married Hannah [6] Scarburgh, daughter of Capt. Edmund [1] Scarburgh (I) (Burgess) and Hannah 'Anna' Smith, circa 1648 at Accomack Co, VA.

Col. John Wise Sr. took the oath of allegiance to hereby engage and promise to be true and faithful to the Commonwealth of England as it is now established without King or House of Lords on 30 March 1651 at Northampton Co, VA. He was shown as John Wise.

He made a will on 21 October 1693 at Accomack Co, VA. He was shown as John Wise Sr. To eldest son John Wise plantation where I now live on Checconessex Creek adjcent the land of Capt. George Parker. To son William Wise land on Onancock Creek. To John Wise, my second son of that name & usually called Johannes, land on the North side of Checconesssx Creek adjcent his brother John Wise. To daughter Barbara Robins. To daughter Hannah Scarburgh, To friend Mr. Thomas Teackle a small silver tankard as a token of my love. To James Lee. To Neome Mikemie & Comfort Taylor, my grandaughters 20 s. @ to buy them a ring. eldest son John Wise Ex'r. Witt: George Parker, John West, Jr. Nich: Hill, John West, minor. John died before 19 November 1695 at Clifton, S. Chesconessex, Acc Co, VA. It was on this date that his will was probated. His body was interred at Wise Cem, S. Chesconessex, Acc Co, VA.

John married Hannah Scarborough, daughter of Capt. Edmund Scarborough I and Hannah (Anna) Smith, about 1648 in Accomack Co., VA. (Hannah Scarborough was born on 25 Dec 1625 in St. Martin's in-the-Fields, London, England and died on 24 Jan 1694 in Accomack Co., VA.)
