Mrs. Whitty Victor died at the home of her son, W.D. Harris, in South Corning at 10 a. m., Thursday, June 22, 1901, aged. 75 years and 11 months.
Mary Lee Deweese was born, in Belmont County, Ohio, July 19, 1825, removed when a child with her parents to Morgan county, Ohio, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Jordan P. Harris, November 6, 1845. She with her husband removed to Athens County, Ohio, where a few years later she was left a widow with three children. In September, 1859 she was married to Obidiah S. Preston and with him removed to Washington County, where they lived, until 1864 when they, removed to Vernon county, Wisconsin when on August 5,1870, she was again called to mourn the loss of her husband. She then removed to Adams county, Iowa, where on July 28, 1887 she was, married to Whitty Victor who survive her. She was the mother of ten children, six of whom are now living, William D. Harris, of South Corning; Lewis D. Harris, of Dell,Wis.; Rebeeca Wagner, of Concordia, Kan.; Stephen H. Preston; of Mt. Etna, la., Isaac H. Preston, of Graham, Mo., and Thomas T. Preston, of Carl, la. These with two brothers, C. B. Deweese, of Corning and G. P. Deweese of Quincy, Iowa, together with a large circle of relatives and friends are left to mourn her loss. Mother Victor was converted in early life and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows of her long and eventful life she lived a devoted Christian, leaving abundant evidence during her last illness of her faith in God, and her hope of a glorious resurrection. She was a faithful member of the U. B. church, and funeral services were conducted by,Rev. R. L. Purdy, .pastor of the U. B. church in this city, assisted by Rev. L. H. Fuller, pastor of the Church of Christ. The remains were laid to rest in the First church in Washington township, where sleep a sister and other relatives.
