Served as a Private, Company G, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry in the Civil War (Union Soldiers Index - National Archives). In the Civil War Service Index - Union (National Archives), it states that at age 18, a clerk and resident of New Bedford, Massachusetts, Alfred G. Hitch enlisted on September 18, 1862. He mustered-in on September 23, 1862 as a Private in Company G (also Co. E?) of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry, USA. He mustered-out on June 26, 1863.
