HITCH, Oliver Lee, 88, passed away September 6, 2013, surrounded by his dearest friends and loving, devoted wife, Victoria. He was preceded in death by his parents, H. Atwood and Rosalee Harrell Hitch of Richmond; and brother, Henry Hitch of Casper, Wyo. Oliver was born in Salisbury, Md. on February 25, 1925, where, as a child, he spent his summers on his grandparents' farm in Allen, Md. He grew up in Marion, Ohio and Alexandria, Va. He attended Randolph Macon Academy and the University of Virginia. His college years were briefly interrupted by his service in the Navy, where he served on a PBM as radio signalman in WWII. After returning to Virginia, he completed his studies at UVA and attended law school. He spent his career years in the insurance business, starting on the company side as a field underwriter for New Amsterdam Casualty Insurance Co., then moving on to the agency side in Richmond with Carneal Insurance. In 1960, he founded the Hitch Agency in downtown Richmond, where he remained until 1981 when he merged his agency with Alexander & Alexander of Virginia. At 70, he retired and reopened the Hitch Agency for another five years. He married his loving wife, Victoria, in early 2004, and they spent their life together aboard their sailboat "Victory" around the Chesapeake Bay, and their winters in Florida and the Bahamas. They lived at Roane Point on the Piankatank River and later in Deltaville on Jackson Creek, and Vero Beach, Fla. In his spare time, Oliver loved hunting with the Dove Club, sailing and spending time with family and friends at Roane Point, where he watched his grandchildren grow up. In his service to his church and community, Oliver served on the boards of Covenant Woods, UMFS, and was the past president of the Richmond Ballet and the Kiwanis Club of Richmond. He was a member of the Commonwealth Club, the Country Club of Virginia, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, West Richmond Businessmen, the Dove Club, and Vero Beach Country Club. He was a member of Reveille UMC, where he served on numerous committees and as a greeter for Sunday services. He is survived by his devoted wife, Victoria; his three children, Lindsay Goodale (Tad) of Brooklin, Maine, Anne Gordon Martin (Alex) of Park City, Utah and Beverly Burch (Jeff) of New Canaan, Conn.; grandchildren, John Martin, Gordon Taylor Martin (Jennifer), Preston Martin, Jessica Burch, Mason Burch, Margaret Burch and Charlotte Burch; two great-grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, at Reveille United Methodist Church, 4200 Cary Street Rd., Richmond, Va. 23221, with burial following at Hollywood Cemetery. A reception will be held afterwards. The family would like to thank his caregivers, with special gratitude to Alex Clack, devoted nurse who spent many nights assisting Oliver. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reveille UMC, the UVA Alumni Association or a charity of your choice.
