In the Federal Census of 1860, Frederick E.(?) Hitch is listed as a clockmaker in a household in the 8th Ward, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts (page 524) as follows: - Frederick E. Hitch, age 20, born in MA.

Served as a Private, Company I, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry in the Civil War (Union Soldiers Index - National Archives). In the Civil War Service Index - Union (National Archives), it states that at age 22, a teacher and resident of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Frederick H. Hitch enlisted on September 22, 1862. He mustered-in on September 23, 1862 as a Private in Company I of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry, USA. He mustered-out on June 26, 1863.

In a file of Veterans Administration Pension Payment Cards (Index) 1907-1933 in the National Archives, it states that Frederic H. Hitch was an Army invalid who died April 26, 1913. He had been a Private in Company I, 3rd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. (Cert. No. 1088954)
