Sarah Hitch, in a May 9, 1864 letter to Young H.E. Hitch writes, "Young Pitts, Leroys brother is somewhere in the armmy. the last account he was in the illenois in the hands of the yankeys. Leroys oldest son is in the armmy also Joseph A. Hitches oldest son is in the armmy. Joseph A.H. has been in it himself but is now at home sick. He got sick at the camp and I fear he never will get well any more."

James Y. Pitts served as Private in Company D of the 1st Battalion of the SC Infantry (Gaillard's) which later became the 27th SC. He enlisted on Feb 28 1863 at Charleston, SC with Capt Hopkins "for the war." Some muster records indicate:

- May/Jun 1863: Present
- Jul/Aug 1863: Absent, sick on furlough
- Sep/Oct 1863: Present
