64. Samuel Hitch, son of Benjamin Hitch and Mary* Brown, was born in 1784 in Worcester Co., MD and died from 1858 to 1859 in Worcester Co., MD at age 74.

Birth Notes: 1850 Federal Census: Samuel Hitch is listed as age 66 in Worcester County, MD, born in MD.

Death Notes: Samuel Hitch died after he divested his land to his sons in 1858 but before the taking of the 1860 Federal Census.

General Notes: On May 15 1812, Samuel Hitch was listed as a Private in the Worcester Militia in the 37th Regiment, 10th Brigade in the War of 1812 (Maryland Militia-Vol. 1, War of 1812 by F. Edward Wright). Also, in Jul 1812, he was listed as a private in "the 10th Brigade, A return of the detachment from the 23rd Regt., Worcester Militia".

Samuel Hitch's father, Benjamin Hitch wrote his will on Mar 21 1814 and it was probated Apr 19 1814. In it, Samuel was bequeathed "one bed and furniture" and Benjamin Hitch also states, "leave to my youngest son Samuel Hitch, plantation I now dwell 50 acres pt. in Worc. County and pt. in Somerset County" (WoW:47,48). Samuel was a witness to the will of his half-brother John Hitch who wrote his will on May 29 1828 and was probated Nov 11 1848 (SoW-1820/37-155,156). Also, he was listed as an heir in the will of his step-mother Leah Hitch, written on May 11 1831 and probated Oct 26 1831 (WoW-1822/33:489).

In the Federal Census of 1830, Samuel Hitch is listed in the 6th District of Worcester County, Maryland (pg 255) in a household comprised of one male age 5-10, one male age 40-50, one female age 10-15 and one female age 40-50. In the Federal Census of 1840, Samuel Hitch is listed in the Western District of Worcester County, Maryland (pg 306) in a household comprised of only two males age 15-20 and one male age 50-60. There were no females present.

On Jul 12 1847, he was mentioned when a public road was surveyed to run through the properties of Benjamin Vincent, Samuel Hitch, Levin Pollitt, William Horsey, Thomas Carey, David Brown, Mike L. Dikes' heirs, & William McGrath. (WoLR-EDM1:112,113) This road maps out the property called "Mount Pleasant" on the Worcester County side of the county road dividing Worcester and Somerset Counties. It also depicts an old school and M.E. Church just down the road from the property. In 1997, both are gone, but the cemetery from Zion Church still stands. The road is described as follows: Beginning at the county road on a line and 8½ feet either side of said line between the lands of Samuel Hitch and Benjamin Vincent, thence S82:30E 60? perches to the corner of said Vincent and Levin Pollitt and Samuel Hitch's lands, thence along the line between Pollitt and Hitch's land N7:30W 38½ perches where it leaves the line. Thence, across Pollitt's land with an old road N65:30E 42 perches to a place in dispute between Hitch and Pollitt by a difference of 1 degree and 45 minutes but the commission is directed to run along the old road N89E 5 perches, thence, S50E 10 perches, thence S61:30E 30 perches, thence S66E 28 perches to lands of William Horsey, "a free black man," and Thomas Carey, thence by and with the line between these two N82E 10 perches. Thence, N65E 10 perches, thence N6E 10 perches, thence N14E 13 perches to David Brown's land, thence N50E 12 perches to land of Mikel Dikes' heirs, thence N81:45E 31 perches, thence N48:30E 12 perches, thence N66:30 12 perches, thence N55:30E 13 perches, thence N19E 16? perches to road leading from county road to William McGrath's, thence with that road S65:30E 15½ perches, S36E 60 perches, S38E 28 perches, thence S57E 50 perches, thence S83E 12 perches across branch near William McGrath's gate. All told a distance of 1¾ miles.

In the Federal Census of 1850, Samuel Hitch is listed in Worcester County, Maryland (pg 193) in household 54, comprised of the following individuals: - Samuel Hitch, age 66, farmer, $200 in real estate - Handy Hitch, age 25 - Harriet Brown, age 40 - Rhoda Brown, age 40 - Eleanor Brown, age 35 - Nancy Brown, age 13 - William Brown, age 19 All were born in Maryland.

Samuel Hitch was apparently an amateur undertaker who performed those duties for his brother-in-law David A. Brown who died on Feb 25 1853. Samuel Hitch is given credit in the court records "for Services in attending to the deceased after his death per his account passed by the Court and assigned to William & John Gunby - $6.00." (WoCC-5:331/344).

On Apr 22 1858, two land transactions took place involving Samuel Hitch and his sons Handy and Henry. These were undertaken probably in preparation for Samuel's death which occurred sometime between this time and the 1860 census. First, Handy Irving Hitch paid $500 to Samuel Hitch for 50 acres of "land called Mount Pleasant situated and lying in Worcester County adjoining land of Matilda Pusey, Isaiah Pollitt, Harvey Vincent and William Hitch". (WoLR-WET1:181). Also, Samuel, Handy and Sarah E. Hitch were paid $500 by Henry W. Hitch for "a tract of land called "Old Buck Harbour (Buck Harbor)" situated and lying in Worcester County and adjoining the land of William McGrath, Thomas Owens and Thomas Brown thence ____ to the three-forked maple containing 74 acres more or less". (Handy was referred to by the name Irving in the land records index; WoLR-WET1:174,175).

General Notes: The following is from the notes of Prof. James L. Brown of Baltimore, MD:

Henrietta (McRitty, Meritty, Ritty) Brown (ca. 1800/1801-between 1830 and 1840), daughter of David (Jr.) and Nancy (Annie) (-) Brown, was born ca. 1800-1801 in Worcester County, Maryland. The 1830 U. S. census record for Worcester County indicates that one female in the household of Samuel Hitch was age 20-30 when the census was taken; she also received a bequest from her grandfathers which helps to narrow the time frame for her birth.

In his will, written 17 January 1802, George Brown (David's father) devised "fifty accars of land whereon I lived called Hath Venter at the upper end of the tract" to his wife during her natural life or widowhood, and "at her death to my grand daughter named McRitty Brown and her heirs forever in fee simple . . ." Also devised to his grand daughter was one half of land called Buck Harbour "lying at the upper end of my plantation . . ." The original 100 acres of Hath Venter (Heaths Adventure) were re-surveyed in 1791; vacancies were added; the land became known as Buck Harbour (193 acres); and a new patent was issued (eventually) to David Brown. While the new patent refers to all 193 acres as Buck Harbour, George Brown clearly separated the two tracts as he knew them during most of his lifetime: the original 100 acre tract was known as Hath Venture (Heaths Adventure) and the new land (vacancies) was known as Buck Harbour.

My Genealogical Adventure on December 26, 1997

It was a very nice day for late December on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with a high temperature approaching 60 degrees. Most folks were jammed into the stores and malls doing after Christmas shopping. However, I was in a genealogy sleuthing mood. My interests had been piqued the previous day, on Christmas, when talking to each of my Grandmothers they had given me some clues to check out in relation to our family history.

My grandmother Hitch (nee Hamilton) had told me of an old family cemetery on a farm about a mile away on Meadow Bridge Road. She had heard of it from a Mrs. Stevenson who now owned the farm and, knowing that I frequent cemeteries (an affliction common among us genealogists), she arranged for me to go and visit it. I trekked out there up a long lane about 0.35 miles back in the field to a small cemetery. It had three headstones of the McGrath family who were not direct ancestors of mine. However, I diligently copied down the information to add to the cemetery records Shari Handley has been collecting on the Internet.

Another lead I had gotten the day before concerned an Elliott ancestor of mine on my maternal side. His name was Benjamin Elliott whom I had been able to piece together limited information from Census records and an old obituary in the Salisbury Advertiser. From these I had figured his birthdate to have been sometime in 1808 and his death as March 16, 1883. I had no clue as to where he was laid to rest. I had a conversation with my grandmother Wiltbank (nee Elliott) about her paternal line and she gave me some good information about where the Elliotts had lived just east of Delmar, MD/DE.

I also consulted my 1876 maps of the Eastern Shore of Maryland and found the residence of a B. Elliott on the east side of Delmar sitting back from the old road that used to be used by the stage coach. The residence was situated very close to the Delaware state line. Using this record, I extrapolated where the location might be on a modern map and set out looking for it. I headed up the old road now called Stage Road that parallels U.S. Route 13 about 1/4 mile to the east. I found an old Nichols Family cemetery not far south of the Delaware line and conjectured that my Ben Elliott might be there. He was not, but again I jotted down the cemetery records for inclusion on the Internet.

I then ventured further up Stage Road until I hit Line Road that actually is the MD/DE line for quite a few miles east of Delmar heading towards the ocean. I headed east on Line Road looking off to the south hoping to see an old farmhouse or something that may have been Ben Elliott's residence back in 1876. There were no houses - just a wide-open field. However, back in one of the fields just a little east of where Stage Road came into Line Road, there was a tell-tale clump of brush sitting back about 200 yards from the road. I slowed down to look for an access road that might lead me back to that brush pile. All I could find was a temporary and very muddy dirt land that had been used by the tractors and other farm equipment that had harvested the crops earlier in the fall. Putting my Explorer into four-wheel drive, I headed across the field.

When I reached the brush pile (which is exactly what it was) all I saw initially was some overgrowth of small trees and a thicket of briars. It also looked as if the farmers had used the area to pile up old dirt and debris from the farm. Basically, it was a mess! I stopped and got out with my trusty Boston Terrier, Yaz to do some exploring. Anyone who has been to the Eastern Shore knows of what we locals call "bull briars". They are a thicket of green vines loaded with long and very sharp thorns. This place was overgrown with them!

I started into the area which measured about 40' by 25' and spotted what looked like to be an old tombstone that had been toppled over. On it was the inscription "Polly Elliott, born December 19, 1811, died October 23, 1870". This was no doubt Benjamin Elliott's wife Mary (Gordy) Elliott! I was really excited as I had not been able to find any record of where the Elliotts were buried from the usual sources (Tatnall and Hudson for Delaware cemeteries and Jacobs for Wicomico County, MD). This cemetery had evidently been remote enough to miss getting into the records and I had found it! However, I wanted to locate my Elliott patriarch, Benjamin so I did some more snooping. Not far away, under some old leaves and briars I found another toppled tombstone that was smashed into numerous pieces. I pulled each piece out into the field and put the five largest chunks together like a big, heavy puzzle. The old marble revealed the following inscription:

Benjamin Elliott Born December 17, 1808 Died March 16, 1883

My great-great-great-great grandfather Elliott had been found! I was delighted to have finally found his resting place after more than seven years of searching! I had also determined his exact birthdate and his middle initial which I had not known previously. For me, this was the mother lode that us genealogists are continually seeking.

The unfortunate thing was the condition of the cemetery. To say it was a mess is understating its horrible condition. Furthermore, the back part of the lot had been piled up with dirt probably covering up other graves in the cemetery. Also, the tombstones had evidently been toppled and broken by careless use of farm equipment in the area. To borrow another Eastern Shore-ism from my grandmother, it's a "cryin' shame" that the old cemetery had been allowed to deteriorate so over the years. I'm glad I found it when I did for I do not expect it to be there in a few years. I expect it to go the way of many of these old farm family cemeteries and either plowed under a field or bull-dozed to make room for a new housing development. This seems to be an unfortunate consequence of modern-day progress. It should also serve as a wake-up call to historians and genealogists everywhere to get out there and record these historical landmarks before they do indeed disappear.
