Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company M of the 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry (Civil War Pension Index - filed in DE, where his widow Mahala A. Shiles collected pension). Notably to the researcher, the "Veteran" Calvary was different than the "Volunteer" Calvary. The 2nd NY Veteran Cavalry was also known as the Empire Light Cavalry. Jesse Shiles is shown on the roster for this unit as "Jesse Shields" and he enlisted and mustered in at Westchester, NY on Aug 3 1864 at age 20 to serve for one year. He mustered out on Aug 24 1865 at Talladega, AL.

(Mahala Anna Stuart was born on 11 Jan 1848 in Sussex Co., DE,5 6 7 8 9 10 11 died on 19 Dec 1935 in New Castle Co., DE 11 12 and was buried on 23 Dec 1935 in Riverview Cemetery, Wilmington, New Castle Co., DE.)
