Mrs. James Howard, Sr., age 69, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Douglas Rutherford, west of town, Wednesday, April 25. Last fall, Mrs. Howard suffered a paralytic stroke and never fully recovered from effects thereof. Her maiden name was Martha Hitch.

She and James Howard were married in Patterson a little more than 50 years ago. They resided in Walkerville township most of the time. She is survived by her husband and children, all grown. They are William (Bud), A. C. and James Howard, Jr., all of Walkerville, Louise, wife of Douglas Rutherford of Swamp College neighborhood. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. William and Solomon Hitch of Patterson are her surviving brothers. Brief funeral services were held at the cemetery at Walkerville on Thursday, April 26.

S. F. M. Hitch

Solomon F. M. Hitch was born in Wilmington, Greene County, Illinois, December 30, 1843, and died at his home near Drake, about one mile from the place of his birth, April 20, 1909, aged 66 years, 3 months and 20 days.

On the 20th day of March, 1867, he and Cyliniria Cotter were married. Five children were born to them, three of whom are still living, the other two dying in infancy. the living children are, William J., and George E. of Patterson and Stella B. wife of F. H. Patterson of Hillview. He is also survived by his wife. One brother William P. Hitch of Patterson are left by him.

Mr. Hitch was an industrious, quiet, good natured man. He attended strictly to his own business and never meddled in the affairs of others. He had a large number of friends but no enemies. He will be greatly missed, not only the members of his family, but by his neighbors.

Funeral services were held at the Patterson church Thursday, April 22, 1909. Rev. T. N. Marsh of Upper Alton, conducting the services. The interment was in the Martin cemetery east of Patterson. There was a large attendance at both the funeral services and burial.

Cyliniria Cotter, daughter of John and Unidillen Cotter, was born near Patterson, Ill., Feb 1, 1851. She died at her home near Drake, Mar. 18, 1920, aged 69 years, 3 months and 18 days.

On the 20th day of March 1867, she was united in marriage to Solomon F. M. Hitch. Five children were born to them. Two died in infancy and George E. preceded her Oct 19, 1912.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one son, William J. Hitch at home, one daughter, Mrs. F. H. Patterson of Hillview and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. George E. Hitch, also seven grandchildren, two brothers, Matthew Cotter of Manchester, David Densmore of Roodhouse, and many other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Elizabeth March died at home 1/2 mile south of Walkerville on June 16. She was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Solomon Hitch and was born at Patterson in 1847. In 1867, she was married to Robert Allen, now deceased. Six children were born to this union. The living children are Manford, Fred, Mrs. Dolly Wahls of Walkerville, and Mrs. Ada Hicks of Roodhouse. Two brothers, Solomon and William Hitch of Patterson and 1 sister, Mrs. James Howard, Sr., of Walkerville survive. She married George March in 1894. Burial was in High Street Cemetery on Thursday.
