Born Feb. 23, 1939, in Shelbyville, Ind., he was a son of the late John and Gertie Smith Hitch. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Washburn Hitch; three sons, John Hitch of Dunnville, Michael Hitch of Orlando, Fla., and Donald Hitch Jr. of Pontiac, Ill.; a daughter, Judy Persyn of Dunnville; a brother, John M. Hitch of Clinton, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home by Ed Parton and Michael Davidson. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John and Donald Hitch, Mont Pendleton, Junior and Shannon Patton. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and after 8 a.m. Wednesday.

General Notes: Ursula Ann Hitch of Onaway died Saturday evening near Potlatch from injuries from an ATV accident. She was 47. Ursula was born April 15, 1962, at Raton, N.M., to Melvin "Hap" and Mary Cosgrove Apple. She grew up and graduated from high school there. She then attended college at the Technical Vocational Institute at Albuquerque, where she met her fantastic husband, James Harlan Hitch. They were married in Parma, Idaho, on Nov. 20, 1982, and moved to Moscow. She worked at Gritman Medical Center for 15 years, where she started as a volunteer for the birthing center, later becoming the child birth educator. She moved from that field to be being a certified nurse's aid with Home Health and Hospice, and also worked at Palouse Empire Gymnastics for about eight years. Ursula found joy in quilting, which she excelled at. She belonged to several quilt groups, including Palouse Patchers and Sanity Seekers. She devoted her whole life to making sure her kids grew up to be loving, caring and generous, just like she was every single day. She was a mother to everyone and anyone who needed one. She touched so many people's lives through her work and involvement in the community and made the world more special just by being in it. Her family was always her first priority. Ursula was able to look at life's obstacles and always knew that they were always temporary and never let them hold her back from life. She saw each day as a new opportunity for an adventure and lived everyday to its fullest. We can only imagine the size of the party she is holding up in heaven. Surviving are her husband, James Hitch of Onaway; her son, Jimmie Hitch of Dawson, M.N.; daughters, Heather Hitch of Boise and Heidy Hitch of Coeur d'Alene; three sisters, Martha Gonzolas in Paton, N.M., Virginia Apple-Ginn and her husband, Bill, in Tucson, Ariz., and Rachel Apple of Trinidad, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Viola Cemetery with John Sherman officiating. A reception will follow at Fire Station No. 2 (near Safeway) in Moscow. A memorial fund has been established at Potlatch No. 1 Credit Union at the Rosauers Branch. General Notes: Herman R. Hitch went into the Army in 1942 and served in Panama and Europe. He was in General Patton's 3rd Army, 10th Armored "Tiger" Division, Company A 3rd Tank Battalion. His first major engagement was for Metz, France when then made a "famous" 90 degree turn to help with the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, Belgium. They suffered many casualties. For this, his unit received the Presidential Unit Citation. He was wounded twice and was evacuated but always returned after short stays in field hospitals. During his service, Herman began driving a tank, then went to Gunner, then Tank Commander, finally reaching the rank of Staff Sargeant by war's end. He was in Bavaria when World War II ended.
Herman married Helen Woods 1475 in Apr 1942.1597 Helen was born on 12 Oct 19221469 and died on 5 Dec 1994 in Mulberry, IN1469,1476 at age 72.
Marriage Notes: In his letter to me dated, Herman R. Hitch stated he had four daughters and one son.
Death Notes: Helen Hitch died on December 5, 1994 after a two-year battle with cancer. In an April 1995 letter, Herman R. Hitch stated that he and his wife had attended an Army reunion in 1992 in Louisville, KY and she wasn't feeling well. This is when she discovered that she had colon cancer.

General Notes: Beulah Virginia Jewell Hitch, 88, of Rossville, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, passing away peacefully at her home on Monday, October 15, 2012, surrounded by family. Beulah was born in Logan, West Virginia on January 3, 1924. She was the daughter of Henry C. and Bertha M. (Pruitt) Jewell. Beulah was the 6th child born into a family of 16 children. At age 17, Beulah left her family's mountain home in Virginia. During World War II, she was employed as a "welder" in the Navy shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia. She became one of the many "Rosie the Riveters," a term for the American women who worked as welders and riveters during World War II replacing male workers who were serving in the military. It was in the Navy shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia where she met her husband, Harold Glen Hitch, who was serving in the Navy. Harold and Beulah were married in South Mills, North Carolina on May 15, 1943. After completing his Navy service, Harold moved his bride to his home area of Rossville, Indiana. They remained in Rossville the rest of their lives. Harold preceded Beulah in death on September 5, 1987, after 44 years of marriage. Beulah's favorite pastime was attending auctions and collecting "antiques." She enjoyed selling her antique treasures during the annual Rockville Covered Bridge Festival. Beulah loved her family and surviving are three daughters: Nancy (Jerry) Goyer of Rossville; Irene (Mark) Evans of rural Mulberry; and Janet (Dennie) Emerson of Phoenix, Arizona; one son: Richard Lee (Jackie) Hitch of Ockley; and nine grandchildren: Ross Goyer, Ben Hopkins, Ricky Hitch, Brian Henry, Brandie (Henry) Oliver, Matt Evans, Jason Goyer, Johnny Hitch and Rachel (Goyer) Naylor; 18 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; two brothers, Curt Jewell and Harold Jewell both of Michigan; two sisters, Mary York of Michigan, and Gay Smith of Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father; one grandson, Guy Allan Goyer; one great-grandson, Blake Oliver; four sisters and six brothers. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at Genda Funeral Home-Rossville Chapel and led by her three oldest grandsons. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m.-2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be in Rossville Cemetery. Military Service: Joined the U. S. Navy during WWII in 1944 after graduating from School. Received his training at the Navy pier in Chicago and assigned to LSM 342 a landing ship for tanks and Artillery as Quartermaster and during combat was a gun spotter. He plotted the course and steered the ship during its service time during WWII from the time it was commissioned in 1944. They sailed down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico through the Panama Canal to San Francisco across to Hawaii and into the combat area. He was involved in many assaults and landings during the Pacific War campaigns in late 1944 and 1945. Three prominent battles he was involved in were landings at Saipan, Mariannas Islands and Okinawa. Though his ship was never directly attacked he was involved in anti-aircraft fire on incoming Japanese Bombers and Kamakazi attacks on the Landing crafts at the invasion sites and fired on enemy held caves and positions on bypassed Islands and unsecured areas. His ship was the flag ship for the invasion landing craft and accepted the surrender of Japanese forces in their area of operation at the end of the War. They were preparing for the invasion of Japan when the Atomic Bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki thereby saving the lives of many US service men as well as Japanese soldiers and civilians. He was discharged honorably in 1946 while at San Franciso Navy Yards and returned home. She also in her younger years took in ironing and did some babysitting. She was also a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters: Marcia A. Laverty of Frankfort and Janet I. Warren of Forest; a son: Randy J. Hitch of Frankfort; three sisters: Louise Prickett, Darlene Scott and Patricia Reed; three brothers: Kenneth, James and Phillip Gleason; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, four brothers and a great-grandson. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Genda Funeral Home, with Pastor Chuck Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. Wednesday until the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Clinton County Humane Society.

Bill met his wife Diana while roller skating and they married on September 29, 1956 in Portland, Oregon. They moved to the Seattle area briefly in 1956, moving to Renton in 1961, where they lived for the next thirty years. There, in 1981 Bill and Diana opened a business, Puget Sound Electronics. Bill worked at and retired from the Boeing Company, after 30 plus years. Shortly after retirement, Bill and Diana moved to Chehalis, Washington where they resided till their passing. Bill loved being involved in Little League baseball, he was an avid Mariners fan, enjoyed gardening and loved listening to the rain. Bill is survived by his children, Terri (Gary) Williams, Karen (Kurt) Howard, Cheryl (Bill) Anderson, Donald (Debbie) Hitch and Lori (Curt) Harvey, all of Washington; 12 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren, nieces Marcia McCleary and Melody Hatch, both of Oregon and nephew Kris Luoma of California.
