A religious service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Thibodaux for Estelle Dennis Hitch, 88, a native and resident of Thibodaux, who died Jan. 18, 2000. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today and 8 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at Landry's Funeral Home in Thibodaux. Burial will be at St. John Episcopal Church Cemetery in Thibodaux.
She was the mother of Bill Hitch of Enterprise, Ala.; and sister of Michael and Clyde Dennis, Pearl George, Lottie Soignet and Emily Rodrigue, all of Thibodaux. She is also survived by two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard M. Hitch Sr.; parents, O.F. "Tobe" and Emily Webre Dennis; and sister, Elizabeth Gervais.

January 20, 2000 Estelle Dennis Hitch, 88, a native and resident of Thibodaux, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in St. John Episcopal Cemetery in Thibodaux. She is survived by one son, Bill Hitch and wife, Evelyn, of Enterprise, Ala.; two brothers, Michael and Clyde Dennis, both of Thibodaux; three sisters, Pearl George, Lottie Soignet and Emily Rodrigue, all of Thibodaux; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard M. Hitch Sr.; her parents, O.F. "Tobe" and Emily Webre Dennis; and one sister, Elizabeth Gervais.

Born in Robertson County, February 25, 1914, to the late William Henry and Elzina Moreland Hitch, he was a retired farmer and a member of Central Christian Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Hill Hitch; three brothers, Rev. Harry Hitch, Claude Hitch and Euehl Hitch and three sisters, Nora Kennedy, Nettie Stoehr and Thelma Sexton. He is survived by his wife, Gladys McCane Hitch; a son, Carl Wayne (Rita) Hitch, Cynthiana; a sister, Erna (Bob) Brock, Lebanon, Ohio; two grandchildren, Kasey True Hitch and Anthony (Teresa) Hitch and 4 great grandchildren, Jayden Kline, Lauren Hitch, Carli Withers, Emma Withers and Chad Barnes. John Houston Hitch, who passed away Friday at the age of 77, was known by his family and friends as a comedian, said his wife of 28 years, Ruby. "He was always telling jokes, even when he was in the hospital," Ruby said, as she was conducting a family visitation at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in downtown Maryville, where funeral services were held Sunday evening. "He may not have known what he was saying, but everything would come out in a joke."
Hitch, who lived in Knoxville, was involved in the music industry for more than five decades. He and Ruby performed radio shows where he used his comedic persona whose alter ago was known as "Zero." When he was 12, he started a band with a friend and co-worker. They would often travel to Sevierville and had to collect money to perform two radio shows that would last 15 minutes. "He didn't know what to call himself," so it was recommended that he call himself 'Zero,' I don't know why," Ruby said with a laugh. At the age of 14, Hitch performed in The Country Ramblers, a three-person band, playing at shows such as Lowell Blanchard's "Tennessee Barn Dance" on Knoxville's WNOX Radio. That "Tennessee Barn Dance" would later on become a signature part of Hitch's life. When Blanchard retired, he resurrected the concept as the "Tennessee Valley Barn Dance" and even hosted it. Hitch also worked as a music promoter, booking legendary artists such as Kenny Rogers and George Jones. "He booked a lot of (artists) through the years," Ruby said. "He was known by people all over the place \emdash Nashville, Bristol, North Carolina \emdash people knew him." The basement in his home and several outbuildings on his property serve as a repository for a collection of dozens of cassettes, CDs, LP records and 45-rpm records.
However, that's just small fraction of memorabilia compared to what is possibly his finest accomplishment. After traveling to Bristol for a family reunion, his cousin talked about decorating a room for his son in memorabilia of the town of Mayberry of "The Andy Griffith Show" fame. Thus, he became the owner and operator of the "Town of Mayberry" at their home. "That's where he got (the idea) of turning our backyard into Mayberry, building buildings such as Floyd's Barber Shop, the Blue Bird Diner, Emmett's Fix-It Shop, Ellie's Drug Store...he just loved his Mayberry stuff."
Visitors have dropped by their home almost daily to see the Mayberry businesses in their backyard. They have never charged a fee for people to see it. Ruby said that her husband's legacy was that "he loved people. He always wanted to make it big in country music. He lived it, and wanted to take everybody else with him." Besides music, comedy and "running" Mayberry, along with his sons helped operate Donny Hitch Collision & Repair in Oak Ridge. "I worked with him there for about eight or nine years," said Johnny Hitch. "He was so exciting \emdash there was never a dull moment with him."
Ruby Hitch added that the words that were inscribed inside his casket were the ones he wanted to live by \emdash "May the work I've done speak for me."
Hitch was preceded in death by his father and mother, Dewey and Emma Cochran Hitch; brother, Don Hitch; sisters, Lillian Lewis, Dorothy Bond, Virginia Breedlove. Besides his wife and sons, Hitch is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Tim Porter of Tallassee; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Ellen Hitch of Maryville, Donny and Tina Hitch of Greenback; stepson and wife, Earl and Danielle Edwards of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Tiffany Goodson, Blake Hitch, Hunter and Hailey Edwards; brother, Charles Hitch of Maryville; sisters, Mary Shropshire, Margaret Chapman, Ina Carver, all of Maryville; mother-in-law, Christina Riffey and numerous other in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Richard Nicely and Sammy Sawyer, known locally for his impersonation of Andy Griffith's bungling deputy Barney Fife, officiated the service. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. today in the cemetery of Clark's Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery, where the Hitches were members, for the interment service.

Dr. Robert Lee Hitch, 82, Kerrville, Texas, formerly of Burrton, died Wednesday, February 12, 1997 at a local care center in Kerrville. He was born July 10. 1914 in East Sweetwater, Monroe County, Tennessee, the son of Luttrell M. and Ruby Johnson Hitch. He lived in Cochise County, Arizona and Burrton. He was adopted by Inez McFall Hitch. He graduated from Burrton High School in 1933 and earned his bachelor of science degree in busisness from Pittsburg State University in 1937. He was editor of the yearbook, president of student council and his class. He earned his master's degree in business education in 1941 from Colorado State University, Greely, Colorado, and a doctorate from the University of Wyoming in 1954. He was a career business editor who taught in Kingman, Iola, Fulton, Missosuri, Jacksonville, Illinois, University of Wyoming, Laramie Wyoming and retired in 1977 from Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan. He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Kerrville, Texas since 1979, was a vestryman in the Episcopal churches in Wyoming, Michigan and St. Peters, Kerryville, Texas. He served six years on the Michigan Education association Board of Directors and belongs to numerous professional organizations. He received the Bishop's Service Cross while senior warden in Michigan, former member of the Rotary Club of Big Rapids, Michigan and Kerrville Rotary Club. On June 9, 1940, he married Helen Churchward at Wichita. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Stephen Hitch, Green Bay, Wisconsin; Thomas Hitch, Columbus, Ohio; and Charles Hitch, Grosse Pointe, Michigan; daughter, Margaret Siemiantkowski, West Bloomfield, Michigan; brother, Evan Hitch, Great Bend; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Memorial serviced was Monday, February 17 at Kerrville, Texas. Burial was to be in Burrton Township City Cemetery, Burrton, Kansas

BIG RAPIDS -- Memorial services for Helen C. Hitch, age 82, of Kerrville, who died Friday, June 12 at her home, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 1998 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kerrville, Texas where she has been a member since 1979. Helen Churchward Hitch, born Jan. 2, 1916, in Wichita, Kan. was the daughter of Marguerite Lehmann and Thomas P. Churchward. Helen graduated from Wichita State University earning her B.S. degree in Elementary Education. Early in her teaching career she met Robert L. Hitch from Burrton, Kan., and they were married on June 9, 1940, at St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita.
Helen lived with her husband and family in Kingman and Iola, Kan.; Fulton, Mo.; Jacksonville, Ill.; Laramie, Wyo.; and Big Rapids where she resumed her teaching career in the Reed City School system, before retiring to Kerrville. While in Kerrville, Helen was an active member of the St. Peter's Episcopal Church and Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by a daughter Margaret and Joseph Siemiantkowski of West Bloomfield; three sons Stephen and Patricia Hitch of Green Bay, Wis., Thomas and Ellen Hitch of Columbus, Ohio, and Charles and Elaine Hitch of Grosse Point; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Helen will be buried next to her husband Robert in the L.M. Hitch plot in the Burrton Township and City Cemetery, District One Harvey County, Kan. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 60 years; three brothers, Robert Wheeler of Louisville, TN, John Wheeler of Louisville, TN, and William D. Wheeler of Marion, AL. Jim was born in Oxnard, California in 1932, to James and Emma Hitch, and was raised in Moorpark, Calif., where he was ASB president both his junior and senior years as well as football captain. He went to Occidental College for two years before transferring to Cal Poly College in San Luis Obispo, where he majored in mechanized agriculture. During this time, Jim met Bette, joined the Army at Ft. Ord and was transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He was offered a contract to play football for the Cleveland Browns which he turned down to finish college and operate the family citrus farm. In 1963, Jim moved his young family northward to escape population growth. He bought his dream farm where the Boise and Snake rivers joined. Jim loved Parma and was active in many areas of the community. For years he volunteered for the city airport-prompting many to call it, "Hitch International". He was also involved with the Parma Rod and Gun Club for over 40 years. Jim loved young people. He worked with Boy Scouts, hauled hundreds of kids to swim meets when they couldn't have gone otherwise, dug an ice rink in Old Fort Boise Park and built firepits for roasting marshmallows. He watched wrestling matches, baseball games, and could still be found trying to climb the football bleachers to his top spot in front of the press box to watch the PHS players. In the last few years, Jim loved watching his three grandchildren become incredibly kind and accomplished adults. At sunset, he loved fishing on his dock with his dog eating Heather's oatmeal cookies. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bette, of Parma; his daughter, Sarah, of Parma; son, Jim, of Walla Walla, Wash.; grandchildren, Jimmie and wife, Kathryn, of D.C., Heather, a BSU senior and Heidy, of Coeur d'Alene, and 'Uncle Lefty' Galloway, of Oxnard, Calif.; …saddle up the horses, Marth Ellen. Jim requested that no funeral services be held, but asked to share the following quote he found years ago: "However one might pray, in any verbal way or completely without words, is unimportant to God. What matters is the heart's intent."

Harriet Green Hitch, 64, of Lawrenceville, died August 10 2004 at home. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., she has been a resident of Lawrenceville for 35 years. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University in 1962, where she was a political science major and a cello student of Janos Starker. She received her master's degree in political science from Rutgers University in 1973. She wrote and helped design the book catalog for the Princeton University Press for 17 years. A civil rights advocate and pacifist, she joined the Princeton Society of Friends (Quakers) in the early 1970s. She was also a volunteer for the Trenton office of the American Civil Liberties Union. The daughter of the late Dorothy Kuersteiner Greene and Lee Seifert Greene, she is survived by her husband of 43 years, Thomas Tipton Hitch; two daughters, Rachel Hitch of Chicago, Ill. and Anne Collins of San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Robert E. Greene of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held this Sunday, August 22 at 12:30 p.m. at the Princeton Monthly (Quaker) Meeting House, at the juncture of Mercer and Quaker Roads. A reception will immediately follow. In the manner of Friends, interment will be private.

General Notes: Joyce Hitch Gray passed away peacefully August 22, 2012 at the Childers Place, Amarillo, Texas. Joyce Hitch Gray was born, October 12, 1916 near Guymon, Oklahoma, on the Henry C. Hitch Ranch. This ranch was homesteaded by her grandfather, James K. Hitch in 1884 and continues to prosper to this day as a family-owned enterprise, headed up by the 5th generation of the Hitch family. From the beginning to the end of her life, Joyce exhibited the strength of her pioneer heritage and a deep, enduring faith. She had an indomitable spirit, an upbeat attitude, a strong will and character, generosity, and an interest and curiosity in people. She was a self-described 'tom-boy'and her childhood was one of adventure -- from climbing to the top of a 75' tall windmill at age 3 to riding horses at a very young age along with her father, Henry C. Hitch, to work cattle and check the pastureland. Some of her happiest childhood memories were of those times spent with her father and on horseback. When the time came to go to school, she rode her pony several miles 'up the creek' to her country school until the 6th grade, after which, she rode in a small school bus into Guymon. After graduating from Guymon High School, she attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK for 3 years. While there, she won many equestrian trophies, riding English style. At the suggestion of her Aunt Erma, her mother's sister who lived in Washington, D.C., she continued her adventures when she moved to Washington, D.C. to complete her college education at George Washington University, earning her bachelor's degree in psychology in early 1939. At GWU, she joined Pi Beta Phi Sorority, where she often entertained her sorority sisters and friends with her singing and piano playing. Her graduation ceremony was a memorable occasion held in the D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C. After graduating, she attended business schools in Washington, D.C. and in Orlando, Florida, where her sister, Marjorie Hitch Price, lived. She and a friend spent two summers in Putnam, Connecticut working as secretaries at the summer home of George Holt of Rollins College located in Winter Park, Florida. After her second summer in Connecticut, she moved to New York City and worked as a secretary at NBC in Rockefeller Center. She shared a Greenwich Village apartment with two sorority sisters, Janet Gray and Dottie Damphere. It was through Janet that Joyce met her future husband, Janet's brother, John Bradford Gray, who passed away in 2001. He was a chemist with American Cyanamid in Stamford, CT. Their dating life was full of fun in NYC, sailing on Long Island Sound and visiting John's parents in Katonah, NY. They were married in the old Methodist Church, Guymon, OK, on September 4, 1941. After they married, Joyce and John lived in Cos Cob, Connecticut where Bradford, their first child was born on the last day of 1942. In 1945 they moved to the Henry C. Hitch Ranch, where Joyce was born and where their second child, Christina, was born in 1946. They lived in the home they built on the ranch for the rest of their lives. Joyce was an active member of the Victory Memorial United Methodist Church in Guymon, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of United Methodist Women, and served on many boards and committees. She was a member and past president of Chapter AM PEO, Pi Beta Phi Sorority, and the DAR. She had many close friends whom she loved and enjoyed. She was a loving mother and wonderful grandmother, often taking her grandchildren, when they were young, out for horseback rides or hikes in the hills on the ranch. Joyce had a lively mind and was always interested in others. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry C. and Christine W. Hitch; husband, John; sister, Marjorie Hitch Price; brother, H.C. Hitch, Jr.; sister-in-law, Lala M. Hitch; and nephews, James C. Hitch, Paul H. Hitch, and Karick A. Price. Her family includes her son, Bradford Hitch Gray and daughter-in-law Helen Darling, Washington, DC; daughter, Christina Gray Staufenberger, and son-in-law, Dick Staufenberger, Bethesda, MD; four grandchildren, Hunter Herron, Drew Herron, Carrie Gray-Droste, and Joshua Gray; four great-grandchildren, Zayne Herron, Gracyn and Hudson Herron, and Simon Gray-Droste. Also, she loved, and was loved by, her four step-grandchildren, Laurie Staufenberger Parr, Kelly Staufenberger Casten, John Nail and Ann Nail Turner and ten step-great grandchildren, Brandon, Courtney and Dylan Parr; Casey, Carly and Cole Casten; Jack and Drew Nail; and Hallie and Eliza Turner. She also had many nieces and nephews who were very special to her.
