Rasmus Hitch Dies Following Long Illness
Daviess County Farmer Died at Daughter's Home.
Rasmus E. Hitch, 69, retired farmer of Daviess county, died at 3:03 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lowell Burris, 504 West Main street.
Death of Mr. Hitch resulted from a four months' illness of complications and he had been seriously ill the last four days.
Born in Petersburg on March 30, 1870, the deceased was a son of W.B. and Sarah A. (Jefferson) Hitch. At the age of five years he came to Daviess county, and had resided in this community ever since. He was a member of the Methodist church and had been a farmer most of his life.
Early in November of 1893, he married Laura Winklepleck, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Roy Sullivan of R. R. 2, Mrs. Lowell Burris of Washington, Mrs. Roy Pershing of San Bernardino, Cal., and Mrs. Wm. Gray of R. R. 2. Another child preceded him in death. Surviving also are 23 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and the following sisters, Mattie Colbert of Washington, Ida Lowe of Bicknell, and Etta Hitch of Washington.
The body of Mr. Hitch was returned to the Burris home this afternoon, and friends may call there to pay respects.
Services for Mr. Hitch will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Maysville M. E. church. Burial will be made in Oak Grove cemetery. James Gill & Sons will have charge of the funeral.

General Notes: Tom J. and Mae Callahan Hitch bought the farm in Thompson's Station known as "Roderick" just before he retired as Farm Bureau president in 1961. Mr. Hitch was born August 19, 1902 in Blount County, the son of the late Andy and Rachel Davis Hitch. He was one of twelve children (seven sons and five daughters). He attended elementary and high school in Blount County and later attended Maryville College and Friendsville Academy. While he was not in shcool, he worked on his father's farm. In 1925 he and two of his brothers purchased a farm, operating it as a partnership until 1945 when they divided the land. Mr. Hitch operated his portion of the farm until it was purchased in the expansion of the Knoxville airport. Mr. and Mrs. Hitch were married October 2, 1926. She was also a native of Blount County and the daughter of Tom Callahan. Although they had no children, they were like parents to many of the young people of the Farm Bureau. Tom Hitch was a charter member of the Blount County Farm Bureau and served as its president for seven years. He was elected to the board of director of the Tennessee Farm Bureau in 1944 and was chosen vice president in the summer of 1946. He was elected president of the Tennessee Farm Bureau in November of 1946, succeeding the first president, the late Joe Frank Porter of Williamsport. At this time he and Mrs. Hitch moved to Columbia to make their home. They were active in the First Baptist Church in Columbia where he was elected a deacon in 1947. He was also chairman of the board of deacons, a Sunday School teacher, member of the choir and chairman of the finance committee. He served for 30 years as a member of the Baptist Hospital board in Nashville and retired in 1986. He served for six years as a member of the Belmont College board of trustees. He served as state president for 15 years and retired in 1961 when they moved to their farm in Thompson's Station. During his presidency of the Tennessee Farm Bureau, he was appointed to President Eisenhower's Agriculture Advisory Commission in 1953 and served for two terms. He also served as a member of the American Farm Bureau Board of Directors, the Tennessee Farmers Cooperative Board, the State Board of Agriculture, a member of the National Livestock and Meat Board and the National Rural Health Board. He was chosen by Progressive Farmer Magazine as their "Man of the Year in Agriculture" in 1951. In 1969 he established the Tom and Mae Hitch Scholarship Endowment Fund to provide scholarships for students enrolled in the College of Agriculture. In 1987 he gave $100,000 to the University of Tennessee Institure of Agriculture and contributed heavily to Belmont College in Nashville. In 1973 Mr. and Mrs. Hitch sold their farm in Thompson's Station and moved back to Columbia where Mrs. Hitch died April 21, 1985. She was buried in the Sherwood Memorial Gardens in Maryville. She was survived by her husband, two brothers, Clyde and George Callahan and a sister, Mrs. Maude Hicks, all of Louisville in Blount County. Mr. Hitch married Girline King in January of 1987. He died January 9, 1989. He was survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Madge Fleming of Knoxville and Mrs. Mildred Clark of Maryville. Charles (Pete) Ward was the manager of Mr. Hitch's farm in Thompson's Station. When Pete was growing up, the Ward family lived in the Plant home on Columbia Highway just south of Thompson's Station where the Holigan Home development is now located. After Pete married Jessel Estes and became manager for Mr. Hitch, they lived in the house on the hill above the big barn on the Hitch farm. After Pete's death Mrs. Ward lived in Spring Hill for several years. The couple had twin sons; Joe Ward of Rome, Georgia and Jerry Ward of Birmingham, Alabama. Jessel Estes Ward had two sisters; Mae Byrd of Louisville, Kentucky and Zilfie Pedigo of Cave City, Kentucky. Pete and Jessel Ward had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The Wards funerals were at the Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee and burial was in Williamson Memorial Gardens in Franklin, Tennessee.

In addition to leading a full and busy life as a farm wife and mother, she taught business, shorthand, and typing at both Everett and Heritage High Schools. Maxine was an avid reader, bird watcher, and wildflower enthusiast. She enjoyed the out-of-doors, especially hiking on the family farm and in the Smoky Mountains. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Maryville, and briefly attended Fairview United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by parents, DeWitt and Milo Wilson, sister, Madge (Orion) Hill, brother O.M. (Loyce) Wilson, husband, Frank Hitch and son Lee Erle Hitch. She is survived by son Ben Hitch, daughter Jan (Russ) Driver, brother Odell (Martha Lee) Wilson, many dear nieces and nephews, and other loving family and friends. The family would like to thank Home Instead Senior Care, Morning View Village Assisted Living, and Kindred Care (Maryville Health) for their loving care. Family will receive friends Saturday, January 12 from 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Smith West Chapel. Funeral will be at 1:00 P.M. at Smith West Chapel. Mildred Candler Hitch, 96, of Shannondale Retirement Community in Knoxville, died Monday, June 14, 1999. A native of Athens and McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Herschel Mahoney and Effie Ellis Candler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Dooley Hitch, an Athens attorney. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was active in United Methodist Women. She had served as a former President of United Methodist Women and was honored in 1981 as United Methodist Woman of the Year. She was also selected as Holston Conference Woman of the Year by the Cleveland District where she had served in various offices for 12 years. She attended Virginia Intermont and George Peabody Colleges and in 1986, she was awarded the Mary Sullivan Award by Tennessee Wesleyan College.
She was a former member of the McMinn County Historical Society, Athens Browning Circle, President of the Advisory Council of Tennessee Wesleyan College and a charter member of McMinn County Living Heritage Museum. Survivors include one son, Candler Dooley Hitch of Montreat, N.C.; two grandsons, Christopher Dooley Hitch of Cary, N.C., and Richard Wilson Hitch of Dallas, Texas; and two great grandchildren, David Patterson Hitch and Sarah Francis Hitch of Cary, N.C. Graveside service and interment of cremains will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens with the Rev. Dr. T. Hartley Hall IV of Black Mountain, N.C., officiating. Charles A. HURD, the present county clerk of Pushmataha County, and a resident of Antlers, is of old Southern family antecedents, and has been identified with that section of Oklahoma for the past fifteen years. Mr. Hurd is a white man, but is married into one of the most prominent Indian families of the old Choctaw Nation, his wife having been a MCCURTAIN.

Three brothers in the McCurtain family have held the office of Governor of the Choctaw Nation. These were Edmund, Jackson and Green. During the administration of the latter the Choctaw Nation became an integral part of the State of Oklahoma and the Choctaw government was deprived of the laws under which it had operated, and thus the administration of Green McCurtain is of particular significance in Oklahoma history. The administration of Jackson McCurtain began in the romance period of Choctaw history, but his activities grew historically real before his death in 1885, for it was during his administration that the present capitol of the nation was erected, and also the Choctaw Female Seminary, both situated at Tuskahoma.

Jackson McCurtain possessed about one-fourth Caucasian blood, enough to give him a conception of the modern, progressive government of the white man. His wife also had about the same degree of Caucasian blood, and while they spoke the Choctaw language, they taught their children English and never permitted them to learn Choctaw during the period of childhood. This is an apt illustration of the progressive spirit of the intellectual Indian of earlier years who had visions of the passing of the tribal form of government.

Jackson McCurtain lived near Tuskahoma and dealt extensively in livestock. He was born in Mississippi and came to Indian Territory at the time of the migration of his tribe. Near Tuskahoma he built an elegant home, the lumber for which was hauled from Stringtown, then the nearest railroad point. This home was burned in late years, but his widow, who yet lives in Tuskahoma, built another home that is more modern. Governor McCurtain was a good business man and made profitable investments. After his death his widow received some $30,000 in cash from his coal investments.

The blood of the McCurtains is fast being put into the white race of Oklahoma, for new generations of the family are getting still higher conceptions of American citizenship. Lucinda F. McCurtain, a daughter of Jackson McCurtain, is the present wife of Mr. Charles A. Hurd. In performing his public and private duties Mr. Hurd is seeking to forward the work of good citizenship and profitable industry, and at the same time he cherishes the interesting activities of Jackson McCurtain and the interesting period in which he lived.

Charles A. Hurd was born in Benton County, Arkansas, in 1878, a son of A. B. and Mary (REED) Hurd. His father, who is still living at the age of sixty-eight, was born in Tennessee, but settled with his parents in Benton County, Arkansas, sixty-five years ago. The mother of Mr. Hurd died in 1894. Two other of their sons are S. W. and J. C. Hurd, now engaged in the oil business at Nowata, while a third, B. C. Hurd, is a teacher at Nowata. The daughter, Mrs. J. R. HITCH, is the wife of a farmer in Benton County, Arkansas, and another, Miss Belle Hurd, lives with her father at Nowata.

Educated in the public schools of Arkansas and the Pea Ridge Normal College, Mr. Charles A. Hurd is a man of practical affairs and his activities have been confined largely to agriculture and stock raising. In 1900 he started his independent business career at Tuskahoma, where in 1903 he married Miss McCurtain. After statehood came he was the first assessor of his home township, and was the second county clerk of Pushmataha County after statehood, having been elected to that office in 1912 and re-elected in 1914. Mr. Hurd is affiliated with the Woodmen of the World, the Modern Woodmen of America and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He has some valuable land holdings in Pushmataha County.
