General Notes: Edward Smoot, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Smoot, was born in Charles County, Maryland. By the will of his father he received land purchased from William Gerard lying in Fauquier County, Virginia, where he established his homestead. On June 11, 1788, bond was offered for his marriage to Susannah Hitch, with Christopher Hitch as the surety.

General Notes: John Smoot, son of John and Tomsen Smoot, was born perhaps in Lord Fairfax Manor, Fauquier County, Virginia. On December 16, 1789, bond was offered for his marriage with Peggy, the daughter of Christopher Hitch, of Fauquier County. His will, proved in Fauquier County, August 26, 1839, named his wife Margaret as the sole heir. His personal estate was appraised at $1,592.27. At the subsequent sale Margaret Smoot was the only purchaser bearing the family name. His widow died in 1842, when she willed most of her estate (negroes) to the State of Virginia.

General Notes: John Hitch was a Private in Mountjoy's 4th Regiment of the Mounted Kentucky Volunteers. He moved to Mercer Co., Kentucky a little prior to 1812 and purchased land in 1813 (Notes from Paul E. Hitch, 2/2/1995).

Eleven Hitch's will was signed on February 24, 1837 and recorded in Blount County Will Book 1, folios 67 and 68. In it, he mentions his wife Lucinda; three youngest sons Archibald, Elias and James W.; son Eleven; sons Benjamin, Wise and John; daughters Catherine Graston, and Mary, Susan and Margaret Hitch. It also notes that son Eleven is "idiotic."

General Notes: This son of Robert is of unknown name. However, he evidently married and lived with his parents as shown by the large family in the household in the 1830 Fauquier County, Virginia Census. 1840 Census records seem to be incomplete, but, in 1850, we see the family of Rachel Hitch with her sons and daughters without a father. All the members of the family match the required ages as represented in the elder Robert Hitch household in 1830.

(Son) married Rachel (?) about 1826. Rachel was born in 1810 in VA.^{¹⁴⁴^,145}

General Notes: Clem Hitch is listed in the 1799 Tax List for Fauquier County, VA.

The book "The Times of Long Ago, Barren County, Kentucky," by Franklin Gorin, 1929 (DAR), that "about 1811/1812" Joseph Warder settled, with a large family of children on Beaver Creek where the Columbia Road crosses it. John, Walter, and William, his sons, were Baptist preachers. His other sons, Joseph and Henry, with his sons-in-law Alexander Evans, Zacheus Quesenberry (Methodist preacher) and Clement Hitch settled near him. (p. 26)

Clement Hitch received two Barren Co., Kentucky land grants in 1818. The first was granted on April 9, 1818, 40 acres on the Fork Beaver Creek watercourse (Kentucky Land Grant, Book G, Folio 232). The second was granted on May 15, 1818 for 35 acres in a nearby location (Ibid., Book E, Folio 14). Furthermore, Clement Hitch was granted more land in Kentucky on May 4, 1830. These covered 14 acres in the county and 139 acres on the Barren Fork watercourse, respectively. (Ibid., Book E-2, Folio 18, 285).

**Indicates that I am now nearly certain that this Clement Hitch is NOT a son of Spencer Hitch of the Eastern Shore of Delaware and Maryland. The historical evidence overwhelmingly suggests that this Clement Hitch is a descendant of the Christopher Hitch line of Prince Georges County, Maryland and later Fauquier County, Virginia. I place him here as son of John Hitch based upon very weak evidence that he named his first son John. Further research is required however to determine his exact parentage within that line. NOTE: please see notes under father John Hitch for more concrete evidence!

Subject: Clement G. Hitch

I contacted you some years ago when I got into genealogy about my family. got away from it for a while, but I have been looking into a few things since. I don't know if you still update your stuff, but if you do I have one piece of info. I found clement G. Hitch's death record. It shows him dying of Old age in Hart county Ky on May 29, 1852 and shows his mother as Ellen Hitch. It does not mention his Fathers name though. I know you have shown his mother as Casandra elgin, but also say it is uncertain because of the childrens ages. Well, in the death record it does say his mother was Ellen Hitch. The record reads Clement G. Hitch, age 76, farmer, residence Hart Co., born Hart Co (obviously incorrect as all his census records show Virgina or in one case Maryland), name of parents or owner of slaves (but only shows Ellen Hitch), date of death as May 29 and cause as Old age. Wish I had more. I will send you more info if you'd like as I continue. Don't know how much more I can find though. There is one odd thing though. Clement was in Kentucky in the period between 1810 and 1820 proved my land records. there was a Samuel Hitch there in the 1810 census, same area, but the age does not really fit for his father and you show his father as John anyway. There had to be a connection though. Same area of Barren County Ky in 1810 as Clement is in a few years later. I'm working on it, but don't know if I ever will get the connection. thanks.
